Middle Rock (Bishan Park II)

A follow up to the post on Canopy cafe, Middle Rock is from the same management team and is located just next to Canopy.

First up is the Caesar Salad. This is decent but in comparison to Canopy, the lettuce are less fresh and the seasoning are not as well done.

Mushroom Soup

Cheese Fries. They were Fantastic. The cheese, bacon, spring onion.. great!

Buffalo Wings. We ordered the lowest level just in case it is too sour. But it turned out to be very sour even when it's only the first level. I can't imagine what's it like at the 3rd level

Aglio Olio is decent but it may be a tad dry and the spaghetti was rather tough. I had a hard time chewing on them.

Ribs. This is delicious. The meat was tender and the sauce was savory, not too strong that will overpower everything.

Eggplant dish. I'm not a fan of eggplant but my my mum did say this was rather tasty and it was a interesting way to have eggplants cooked this way. Do give it a try.

All in all I would recommend this place for its ambiance. They have couch seats outdoors just beside the park's running track so it's rather peaceful. It is also good for parties or get-togethers. However, I personally prefer Canopy for the fresher ingredients, but do drop by to try this yourself!

Udders (United Sq.)

Another cool ice cream place is the Udders. They serve tasty waffles and creative sundaes. Their selling point would be their self invented flavors. They have liquor, Asian-inspired (durian!) and cosmopolitan flavors. Below is the Corny Honey flavor (ice cream with cereal and digestives). Not too sweet and very addictive. It has been four days since I've eaten this.. I'm so craving for this special flavor. The waffles are OK, but it can be softer.

Some Foods I Ate In Hong Kong and Taiwan

During my last trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan, I tried some interesting and yummy foods so here we go!

These are street food dishes. They are not the usual snacks you see along the streets, rather they are casual restaurants at heartland areas. Tourists may find it especially hard to search for such restaurants because they may not be located at the main roads. However, they serve very authentic signature Hong Kong and Teochew dishes. Some of the more popular dishes would be sweet and sour pork, pig internals (sounds disgusting but my parents say its good), Mantis Shrimps (also known as the 'pissing shrimp' in cantonese!), fish etc. All the dishes have a very strong taste and somehow beer accompanies well with them.

These are common snacks found along the streets of Hong Kong. They are cheap yet extremely extremely delicious. They are common among locals and tourists enjoy them too. My favorite snack would be the cheung fun (the long white thingy in the picture below). They are smooth and with peanut butter and sweet sauce, they taste good. It's simple and are eaten with the toothpicks. This is unique to Hong Kong and will always be. Some will add in siew mai, fish balls or pigskin too complement their cheung fun.

This is from Tsui Wah Restaurant which is  now a chain in Hong Kong. They serve the classic Hong Kong noodles and rice etc. Not a bad place for tourists but the standard varies and the queue is long during peak hours. It may be a bit expensive compared to other cha cheung teng (i'll do another post on what this is after my trip to hk soon)

This is a snippet of the seafood dishes we ordered during a family gathering. When we order seafood dishes here in Hong Kong, there's always the same few ways of cooking but it always wonders me how it tastes zoo good even single time. Well, that's basically because seafood in HK is fresher than Singapore and no matter which way of cooking, it will always taste delicious.

Hong Kong desserts are another something everyone should try. There are a variety of desserts ranging from cold to hot and sweet to sour. There are a couple of desserts that are my favorites. I will write more about HK desserts in upcoming posts.

Australian Milk Factory.
They serve one of the best set meals. Picture below is the scrambled egg toast, ham macaroni and ice milk tea. The one on the right is the steamed egg white (HK dessert style). The scrambled eggs are very smooth and soft. It goes well with the macaroni. Something that I will not be bored eating all day. However, due to its high popularity, there is always a long queue for this shop and you are expected to eat quickly (the overall vibe is like rushing people to finish their meals) which is not good news for me because I cannot eat that quickly with braces, especially with my rubber bands. Also not a great place to chit chat with your friends because you will definitely be rushed. Nonetheless, the food is so yummy I don't mind the horrible ambiance and bad service.

Below are the food I've tried in Taiwan. I could not recall what I ate exactly since I was there for two times only. So this shall be a picture montage!

I don't like vegetables, but the cabbage there is so fresh, the leaves are actually sweet.

Canopy Cafe (Bishan ParkII)

Canopy Cafe is located at Bishan Park II. It is central Singapore so it is rather convenient especially so for park users. Deli in the Park Corporation has set up three cafes (Canopy, The Green Room Cafe and Middle Rock) all in the same area. They have lived up to their motto in offering a peaceful dining experience in the heart of the city. I've only tried canopy but i will surely try the other two in the near future.

Appetizer: classic Caesar Salad

This was a tad different from the usual because they added a half boiled egg inside and I'm pretty sure it'll be heavenly yummy if you spread the yolk. However, my family is pretty health conscience so we didn't. The lettuce was fresh while the bacon and garlic bread was crispy. (I didn't eat them because eating crunchy food with rubber bands in my mouth was a toll)

Price range (appetizer): $10-$18
Main Course: Crab Meat Aglio Olio.

THIS was f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c. Ok I do sound like I'm exaggerating but this is the best Aglio Olio I've eaten so far. Unlike the usual Aglio Olio i tasted outside, this does not overwhelm you with the garlic taste and also it isn't oily at all. The parsley is the key ingredient, it gave the entire dish more flavor (that is if you like the taste of parsley). Also the addition of crab meat is creative and refreshing because most places only do it with mushrooms or bacon etc.

Price rang(main course) : $15-$30
Main Course: Pork Rack

This surprised me because I expected it to be tough and all but it was actually quite easy to chew on. Probably because the cooking duration was just right. Surprisingly(again), the broccoli which is not the main star here, taste really fresh too!

Main Course: Lamb Shank

Not a great fan of the lamb taste but my brother said the meat was soft yet delicious so maybe you can give it a try too.
Desert: apple crumble

OMG. This is shhooooooo tasty. I can't even emphasize it better. This is by far, the most delicious apple crumble I've ever eaten. The cold ice cream together with the hot crumble bits is simply a match made in heaven. I am not exaggerating. And because this freshly baked in the oven, there is the honey coated apples underneath is still hot. It taste really good when eaten with the ice cream.

Brunch:
Eggs Benedict
Pancakes
(this was bigger than my face!)
Big Breakfast
Crabmeat Aglio Olio
(yes, they do serve some dinner items here)

Beef Bourgogne
(I may have remembered this wrongly)
Apple Crumble

All in all you should try this place if you pass by while jogging or just wanna to experience some tranquil in the heart of the city. The Al-fresco area allows pets which is a huge advantage. I will surely bring my dog along more often. It may be crowded during weekends dinner time but they do not accept reservations so do be there early.

Porns Thai Food

Sexy.Thai.Food

Porns is another restaurant that serves delicious Thai food. Two must-try dishes I recommend would be Tom yum soup (I prefer chili paste base), deep fried prawn/fish cake, phad thai, green curry and many more (I'll update as i try more dishes). Porns is opened by Pornsak, a famous celebrity in Singapore that is known for local food programs. Clearly, he has done a good job manning his shops as the Thai food here was great.

Although the tom yum here is less spicy, they have added in a lot of herbs and parsley so it was rather fragrant overall. They serve tom yum in two sizes, the bigger one (above picture) is better as the fire below keeps the soup warm. The one below turned cold very quickly.

Another famous Thai delicacy would be Phad Thai. It is a stir-fried rice noodle dish that is commonly served as a street food in Thailand. Other ingredients can include shrimps, eggs, been sprouts, sotong. There are additional seasonings (palm sugar, peanuts and lime) on the side. This was done correctly here and it smelled very good and the noodles are not too watery. There's a tinge of sourness which can be balanced out by the sugar seasoning at the side.

This is Beef noodles and is one of the lunch set meals. I would say that the soup was a tad bland but nevertheless, the meatballs were springy and tasted good. The set meals are $8.90+ depending on which outlet you visit. For more info on the different set menu, visit: http://www.porns.com.sg/home.html (this interactive website is pretty cool)

Overall, I would definitely recommend this place as it is affordable and delicious. It can get rather crowded in the Liand Seah outlet during dinner times but the warm ambiance is great for get-togethers.

Siam Society

I stumbled upon a Thai Restaurant while I was on the way to Wimbly Lu. Yes, this is situated just next to Wimbly Lu and I seriously couldn't resist the temptation of Thai Food so, I ended up in Siam Society instead of Wimbly Lu. And well, that's a happy mistake because the Thai food here is fantastic.

Once again, we ordered the usual staple: Tom yum and green curry. The tom yum was shiok because it's sour and spicy but to the correct extent. Most shops i've visited only provided the sour taste but I prefer the kick from the spicy-ness. I was sweating profusely just 5 minutes into my meal but it sure feels good haha. I didn't have much green curry but I remembered it being thick and very savory because many herbs were used. There are many other dishes that I've yet to try in this restaurant. I will definitely visit this place again.

Good ambiance but it can be a bit inaccessible. Two dishes cost me around $25 and it is quite pricey, but this is worth it. Of course, my new challenge will be going to Wimbly Lu without getting distracted by delicious Thai food next door XD

Ramen Santouka (Cuppage Terrence)

Eating noodles with braes is definitely not a easy task. They get stuck between the brackets and it is very irritating. But this has not lessen my love for ramen. Ramen Santouka serves one of the better ramen in Singapore. Their broth is thick and is not too sweet nor salty. I tried the spicy broth which was manageable even for non-spicy eaters. The noodles are so springy and there was this wonderful overall texture while chewing. The set meals (~$23-25) include a small ramen, a small side dish (curry rice/terriyaki chicken rice etc), salad, chawamushi, kimchi and a cup of hot tea. This place is rather crowded during dinner times so be sure to reach there early. Do sit indoors as the outdoor areas are very stuffy especially after eating a bowl of hot ramen.
